Titanium dioxide (TiO2) produces opacity by reflecting light, thanks to its ability to scatter light. When light passes through or near titanium dioxide particles, refraction and diffraction occur. If there are enough particles, all the light hitting the surface is reflected outward, giving the object an opaque white appearance.
